Character Depth -
Appearance: Being naturally "lucky", Gareth has been able to coast through life, giving him a very laid back appearance. Jeans and t-shirts are the order of the day, especially having grown up in a poor immigrant family. The youngest of six brothers, he is used to hand-me-downs and rarely purchases brand new clothes. He keeps his hair cut fairly short and if he has any facial hair at all, it's because he hasn't bothered to shave in a few days. If he cleaned up a bit, he'd actually be quite handsome - not movie star gorgeous but at least presentable.
Personality: It's not in Gareth's nature to be selfish, having grown up in a poor family that still made it a priority to help others even less fortunate. Because of this, whenever he finds himself in a lucky situation, he generally tries to help other people in the same way he was helped - for instance, for years his friends would buy him drinks at their favorite pub as he was having financial difficulties. When his ability kicked in and he won a large amount of money at a horse race, he spent it all buying the entire bar rounds of drinks.
While he is fairly altruistic and likes to help others, he is also an attention addict, having to have to fight for attention his whole childhood in such a large family.
Quirks/Phobias/Oddities: Gareth is a hard drinker and a cigarette smoker, but consciously avoids marijuana or any hard drugs. He doesn't like to spend a lot of time alone, as he's not really used to it.
Skills and Talents: He is a trivia addict and an excellent dart player.
Family/Past relationships: He is the youngest of six brothers (none of which, for the time being, have shown any evidence of superhuman ability). He can be a bit of a philanderer, so he rarely hlds down a long romantic relationship. A lot of this could be due to both his mother and his only real steady girlfriend (four years) having died of Cancer the same year.
Misc. Traits and Trivia: Even before his power kicked in, he qualified for a televised poker tournament on ESPN. However, he got drunk the night of the big match and missed it, thus being banned from the tour for five years.
History: Gareth was born in Dublin, Ireland as the youngest of six brothers. At age 2 his family moved to New York City and then Cincinnati, OH where he grew up. He was born with a slight defect in his right leg that causes him to limp slightly, especially when he runs. Because of this, he rarely participated in high school sports like his older brothers did. Instead, he turned his attention to games - darts, poker, etc.
After graduating high school, he drifted a bit, never really able to hold down a job and lived a very relaxed, unmotivated life. Through a strange number of coincidences, he found himself never really having any major financial problems and frequently got himself out of scrapes that normally people would have been severely hurt or arrested during.
After even more and more months of "good luck" Gareth began to get suspicious, and began to think that maybe, just maybe, he was meant for more than just working in a factory and drinking every night with his friends...
Hero stuff -
Power: Gareth has the unconscious ability to immediately calculate the odds of any situation and react accordingly, even if the events are completely random (for instance, the drawing of lottery numbers). In extreme, life-threatening circumstances it would appear that he is even able to ALTER the probability of a situation. This could range anywhere from selecting which wire is needed to defuse a bomb to making a 1 in 1 million shit with a pistol.
Level of mastery/awareness of power: Because he doesn't consciously calculate odds in his head, act first Gareth's power is reactionary. As his power grows and he gains more control over it, he finds he is able to affect the odds in his favor and also discovers that in some instances, he is able to perform feats he normally would not be able to.
This is not to say that the manipulation of probability gives him other superhuman powers. He has the same physical abilities as any normal person and his ability to manipulate probability reflects that. You won't be seeing him lifting burning cars off people or breathing underwater. Some odds are just TOO high.
Alliegence: At the moment, Gareth has no allegiances as he's unaware of others like him. However, by nature he's a very caring person who wants to help people. He does, however, have some emotional issues and thus is easily manipulated.
Goals/Driving purposes: Like anyone his age who is sort of aimlessly drifting, Gareth would like to FIND a purpose to his life - something other than meaningless daily work and then drinking with his friends. With the discovery of his ability along with fighting temptation to use it for selfish means, he is off to find out what his purpose really is.

Roleplaying Experience: I used to be heavily involved in message board roleplaying in the mid 90s, lots of fantasy stuff, both on boards and AOL chat rooms. I was also heavily into Fantasy Wrestling, writing "promos" (interviews) from the viewpoint of numerous different characters. As for Heroes, it's my favorite show. I never miss an episode, I read the message boards, and I want to play a Heroes online RPG.
Roleplaying Sample:
Gareth counted the money in his hands carefully as if, like it was a dream, he'd look away and it would be replaced with flowers or snakes when he looked back. He blinked. It was still there. He tucked the money away and looked at his racing form - all winners, even the longshots. And there were longshots. Big time. He hadn't merely placed - ALL his horses had won.
A glance at his shrugging brother lead to no answers either. He hadn't had any system for picking the winners - he simply read the forms, the information contained within, and picked his winners at random.
A part of him wanted to go back and play some more races, but the glares of some of the scarier looking gentlemen in sunglasses suggested he do otherwise. So he hailed a cab and he and his brother went to the first place they could think of to celebrate.
For once, HE was going to be buying the drinks at O'Malley's.
