Will slowly made his way home, not really paying attention to the route he was taking. The streets blurred together as he walked, his body tired and his mind weary. That was the third time he had collapsed in a week and he was starting to worry. I already seem to be awful at everything, now I'm fainting... Will shivered slightly as he looked up at the sky, the crisp night sky sparkling slightly. He was so enthralled in the sky above that he didn't even notice the old woman coming his way before they collided.
Will fell hard onto the asphalt in a flurry of vegetables and fruit. He saw an old woman across from him sprawled on the sidewalk, her cane knocked away. Will tried to get up as quickly as he could, calling out to her. “I'm so sorry. Are you...are you okay?” His face was filled with worry as he looked at her, thoughts of her physical frailty and potential damage he had caused filling his mind.
She looked stunned for a moment and slowly began to get up. “Thoughts elsewhere?” She asked, smiling slightly at Will. He looked away, still feeling guilty for knocking down the older woman. He helped her to her feet and led her over to the nearby bench. “Sorry again...” Will paused akwardly, his mind uneasy at her lack of anger. “Let me grab your things.” It took him several minutes to gather up all the produce which had managed to roll all over the city block. When he returned to the elderly woman, she seemed to still be in good spirits. He offered to carry the bag home for her, but she merely smiled.
“It's not far, I'll be fine. Just try to be a bit more aware next time, young man.” He looked away from her, blushing in embarrasment. She got up from the bench and began to walk briskly down the street. Will turned to walk the opposite direction when he noticed her cane lying nearby. He picked it up and turned back to call out to her. “You...you left your cane.” She turned, pausing as she looked at it, and walked quickly back over.
“I...I suppose I did. Thank you.” She put the cane under her arm and readjusted her grocery bag. Will watched her go, amazed at her agility and strength. His own, on the other hand, seemed almost completely gone. He hobbled the next few blocks to his apartment and barely made it up the two flights of stairs. Will stopped at the door, resting against it. What's...wrong... He struggled to pull his keys out and place them in his lock. He turned it and pushed open the door, barely managing to close it behind him. Will wandered over to his bed, his eyes already closed, as his body grew heavy and immobile. His body was empty as he drifted off to a dreamless sleep, hunger and worry waiting for him when he awoke.
